In our safe and casual atmosphere, you will learn about hand tools, sharpening,
safety, various woods and
materials, joinery techniques, fasteners, hand power tools and machines.
Have fun spending a few evenings in our professional, fully equipped shops.

About the Program:
The program is now broken down into
Four Levels.
Levels 1, 2, and 3 are designed to help you gain confidence and develop a fundamental
understanding woodworking tools, machines, and techniques.
These programs are to be completed in order so as to have the necessary skills
to move on to the next level.
Through completion of Levels 1, 2 and 3 (and the designated projects), you should
have the skill to go on to making a project of your own choice in the Level
4 course.
( Level 3 students will move on to Level 4 at the Instructor's discretion.)
During Level 4 the instructor will provide guidance and some problem solving
to help you complete your own project. Level 4 would be best described as open
shop time with instructor back-up.
Graduates of Level 4 Woodworking will get a Certificate of Achievement from
Okanagan College.
Details:
The Level 1 project
is a floor standing book shelf made of hardwood plywood and solid wood parts
as well.
You will learn about lumber selection, how to select parts and cut them from
a sheet of good plywood, how to dress (breakout) rough solid lumber on a jointer,
thickness planer and table saw.
You will use routers, jigs, drill press, hand planes, and many other tools.
You will learn how to apply solid wood edging to plywood as well as learn to
easily sharpen any wood working tool.
If time permits, you can apply a finish on your new bookshelf.
The Level 2 program
project is a fancy solid wood wall hung curio or CD cabinet with a door.
The cabinet is made up of all solid wood parts edge glued together. There are
table routing procedures, making a door for the cabinet, fitting and hanging
the door on hinges along with closure hardware. The door will be proper frame
and panel construction with mortise and tenon joints. You will learn how to
break out hardwood and glue up perfectly stable and flat panels.
The Level 3 program project will be a small beautiful hardwood side / display table with a single drawer. The table has elegant tapered legs. The drawer will be properly fitted without slide hardware and the corners of the drawer are dovetailed. You will be focusing on handwork more at this level than in previous levels.
During Level 4 the
instructor will provide guidance and some problem solving to help you complete
your own (small) project of your own design. Level 4 would be best described
as open shop time with instructor back-up.
Graduates of Level 4 Woodworking will get a Certificate of Achievement from
Okanagan College.
NOTE: Anyone
who has successfully completed Level 1 is welcome to return to Level 1 programs,
as well as move on to Level 2. In other words, you can always repeat Levels
if you want more shop and instruction time.

Schedule:
-Each program consists of two nights per week for five weeks.
-Ten evenings of 3 hours each.
-Hours are 6pm to 9pm. 30 hours of instruction and shop time.

Specialized Workshops:
We have been developing some new
short term specialized workshops.
These workshops are focused toward both the home woodworker and the professional
woodworker that might like to gain some skill in more specific areas of our
craft.
These workshops are more of a demonstration/ lecture format with some hands-on
time as well.
'Kitchen Cabinet
Making for the Home Woodworker'
Learn about kitchen cabinet making from Red Seal Journeyman Cabinetmakers and
Instructors. This course will show you how to build cabinets, doors, drawers
and laminate counter tops, as well as install European hinge hardware. Through
demonstrations and explanation you will gain the knowledge to renovate your
kitchen or just improve on your wood working skills. This course will be taught
with the home crafts person in mind. All techniques can be carried out with
a basic skill level using tools and in the home shop.
Course length: Three evenings. 6
to 9pm.
Dates: March 24, 26, and 31st.
Location: Okanagan College Joinery Shop at the West end of the KLO Campus.
'Secrets to Hand and Table Routing'
This course is for the woodworker looking to gain knowledge in basic and advanced
routing. Topics include how to avoid router pitfalls, router techniques, the
use of fences and pilot bearing bits, creating jigs and building a router table.
About this workshop:
- Introduction to routers
- Safety, sizes, maintenance, shank sizes, variable speed settings,
direction of rotation, tightening a bit, changing pilot bearings.
- How to best approach the job.
- Avoiding chipping, burning, edging 4 sides of solid stock, edging narrow stock,
cutting direction, using feather boards.
- Types and uses of various router bits. Bits used for both joinery and decoration.
- Specific techniques: Spline joints, tongue & groove, mortise & tenon,
bullnose,
straight lining, raised panel door profile, rabbets/dados, trimming plastic
laminate etc.
- Using non pilot/pilot bits and fences.
- Using router table fences.
- Straight routing, routing entire edge (offsetting out feed fence).
- Plunge router and plunge routing, following fences, using template guides
(collars).
- Hand routing/contour routing.
- Creating jigs.
- Stile & rail doors, panel designs, arches/curves/circles, pattern routing.
- Techniques/tips for building a router table.
Workshop Length: Two sessions lasting
3 hours each
Dates: April 7, and 9.
Location: Okanagan college Joinery Shop at the West end of the KLO Campus.

'Basic Finishing Techniques'
About This Workshop:
A program focused toward anyone
seeking basic finishing skills as it relates to woodworking.
SANDING
1. Safety.
2. Grits, styles and brands of sandpapers.
3. Sanding tools. Hand sanding tech. Introduction to sanding machines / types.
4. How to sand properly. Preparing a project to be finished. Technique.
FINISHING
1. Safety with application; (venting, protective wear/suits, respirators, WHIMS,
Awareness etc.)
2. Different types of finishes; (compatibility, colours, pigments, clarity,
durability, sheen, etc.)
3. Selecting the proper finish (colour, sheen, durability, compatibility)
4. Applying a finish, (safety with demonstration, application, procedures, temperatures,
viscosity, coverage of different materials, dry time, etc)
5. Sanding between coats (if needed) - (grits, blocks, application, techniques)
6. Apply final coat.
7. Cure times and maintenance on final product.
Schedule: Three evenings of 3 hours
each. 6 to 9 p.m.

The Art of Veneer'
- Everything you might want to know about this misunderstood, yet essential
process.
Tips on easy veneering in the home workshop. Types of veneers and how to work
with them.
We are also setting up some workshops
for the professionals and shop owners that would like to be upgraded in specific
skills of the trade. These workshops will be targeted towards people already
in the trade.

Journeyman Cabinetmaker/ Joiner. Apprenticeship and Fine Woodworking Instructor
at Okanagan College.
Tim has 30 years of experience in the woodworking industry. Both self employed
and as an employee, Tim's work has encompassed boat building, yacht Interiors,
shipwright, custom guitarmaking, staircases and balustrades, custom furniture
and millwork, and a short stint as a spaceship builder for Disney Studios.
~ Brent Kelly~
Journeyman Cabinetmaker/ Joiner. Auxiliary Apprenticeship Instructor. Brent
has been involved in the Millwork trade for many years.
~ Kris Heltman~
Journeyman Cabinetmaker/ Joiner. Kris has been both self employed and an employee
involved in the custom Millwork and Fine Furniture trade for many years. Although
well versed in many facets of the trade, Kris has years of experience in the
finishing side of things.
